Tortuguero is still one of the few corners of Costa Rica you cannot drive into. Guests reach El Deseo Serendipity the same way locals move everything: by boat through the canals, with jungle on both banks and the Caribbean somewhere beyond the trees.
From San José (SJO)
- •Bus + boat: Early bus toward Cariari, then onward to the La Pavona dock. From there it is a scenic 60–90 minute canal ride to the village. Plan roughly 5–6 hours door to dockside.
- •Private transfer: We can arrange hotel pickup to La Pavona with a timed boat connection. Daytime departures work best — message us before you book flights.
- •Small plane: A short hop from San José lands at Tortuguero's airstrip; from there it is a brief boat or village transfer to the lodge.
From Liberia (LIR)
Treat it as a full travel day: overland to La Pavona (about 4–5 hours) plus the boat. We coordinate the legs so you are not guessing dock times.
Why the boat ride matters
That final stretch is not a shuttle — it is the first wildlife walk of the trip. Keep a camera handy for herons, kingfishers, caimans on the banks, and the occasional sloth over the water.
