There is no "closed" season for Tortuguero. The canals keep moving, the forest stays loud with life, and lodge porches stay green. What changes is the character of the week you book.
Mid-year for turtles
July–October is turtle season: afternoon showers, lush trails, and night walks to the nesting beach. Come for the wildlife story Tortuguero is famous for.
Drier mornings for walks and photos
February–April is as close as we get to a dry stretch. Paths firm up, dawn light is clean, and it is a sweet window for birding and long canal mornings.
Tarpon and snook windows
Anglers watch March–May and September–November for tarpon on the Colorado system; snook often heat up around full moons. Pair fishing days with quiet lodge evenings.
Quieter December and January
Fewer visitors, cooler nights, and a dripping, photogenic jungle. Ideal if you want solitude more than peak nesting crowds.
Our lodge tip
Chase turtles mid-July through mid-September. Otherwise choose the mood — monkeys, sloths, toucans and caimans do not take a month off. Tell us what you hope to see and we will suggest nights that fit.
